                                                              "Dualidade@br"

Concept of Hybridity

Definition of the word in the dictionary is explained as if in Genetics The offspring of genetically dissimilar parents or stock, especially the offspring produced by breeding plants or animals of different varieties, species, or races. Something of mixed origin or composition, something, such as a computer or power plant, having two kinds of components that produce the same or similar results, or a word whose elements are derived from different languages.

The term “hybridity” is used in a diverse and often contradictory range of manner. I would like to utilize the term in the arena of cultural and postcolonial argument as I would like to discuss and analyze, concentrating on its multifaceted term filtering and catalyzing through a choreographed dance piece, titled “Duality@br”.

In the year 2000, I was invited and commissioned by Teatro Municipal de São Paulo (São Paulo state Municipal Theatre), to create for the São Paulo ballet a choreographic dance work, there I was proposed specifically to create a dance piece that would contain a Portuguese traditional music that could illustrate and divulge the ancient and long distanced Portuguese roots of Brazilian nation. The proposition was curious and challenging, I accepted the offer. There had never been an attempt to create a Portuguese origin choreographic piece, a contemporary dance piece that is inspired by traditional Portuguese music the Fado, and eventually is enlightening the distant historical memory and its postcolonial and original roots and interpreted by Brazilian dance.
